Assignments

The following topics describe the tasks associated with posting and managing class assignments as well as reviewing submitted assignments and viewing assignments as your students see them:

Post an Assignment to a Class

When you create a new assignment, you can include links and files and add the assignment to your Gradebook. You can choose to display the assignment on the calendar and on the parent and/or student portals. You can also specify the length of time the assignment is visible to parents and students.

Important: The ParentPlus and StudentPlus mobile apps only display assignments you post to the calendar.

Note: To copy an assignment from another class, see Copy an Assignment to a Class.

Follow these steps to add an assignment to your Class page:

  1. On the Home tab, for the class you want to add the assignment to, click > Add Assignment  > New.
     

    or
     
    If you're on the Class Page, click the Overview tab, scroll down to the Assignment panel, click Add  > New assignment.
     
  2. See the diagrams and tables below for the New Assignment dialog box options.
     

 

New Assignment Dialog Box - Upper Section

A

Type a title and a description for the assignment.

B

Select the check box to display the assignment on the Coursework panel in the student and parent portals.

C

Type the due date, or click to select the date.

D

Type the range of dates you want the assignment to be visible to students and parents in their portals, or click to select the date range.

Important: The assignment will not be visible after the To date.

E

To share a link with students, type the link URL. You can change how the link displays by typing a link title in Link Text.

F

You can attach a file from My Computer, Google Drive, or your personal OneDrive.

Tip: To select multiple files, press Ctrl while clicking the files you want to upload.

Important: The file size limit for attachments is 50 MB.

Select the check boxes for the classes you want to add the assignment to.

Select the Post to Calendar check box to add the assignment to your portal calendar.

You can then select the Parent and/or Student check boxes to show the assignment on the parent and/or student portal calendars.

Note: Assignments posted to the portal calendar also appear on the Upcoming Events panel on the Home tab.

From the Category drop-down list, select a calendar event category for the assignment, which you can use to filter the events you see on the calendar.

Important: If you select the Post to Calendar check box for an assignment you're adding to multiple sections, an assignment event for each section will appear on the calendar. To post one assignment event for all the sections, clear the Post to Calendar check box and manually add the event to your calendar.

Tip: You can set default calendar and parent/student visibility settings for all assignments. (See Automatically Post Assignments to Your Calendar.)

Add the assignment to the Gradebook where it will display as a new column.

For Gradebook assignments only: Select a marking period.

For Gradebook assignments only: If you want to link skills and standards to the Gradebook assignment, click Link Skills/Indicators, select the check boxes for the appropriate skills and standards, and then click OK.

For Gradebook assignments only: Select an assignment category.

Note: Assignment categories are created in the Gradebook.

For Gradebook assignments only: Type the maximum number of possible points a student can earn for the assignment.

Important: This option is not available for classes using full standards-based grading.

For Gradebook assignments only: Select the check box to count in averages.

O

Select the check box to notify students and/or parents that you've posted an assignment. (See Automatically Send E-mail Notifications.)

P

Save the assignment, and then click OK to post it.


 

Copy an Assignment to a Class

You can copy an assignment from a class the previous year or from a class in the current year. You can also copy an assignment from another section of the same class.

Note: To create a new assignment and add it to a class, see Post an Assignment to a Class.


Copy Assignments from a Previous Year or Another Class in the Current Year

To copy an assignment from a previous year or from another class in the current year, follow these steps:

  1. On the Home tab, for the class you want to add the assignment to, click  > Add Assignment. > From Library.
     

    or
     
    If you're on the Class Page, click the Overview tab, scroll down to the Assignments panel, and click Add > Assignment from library.
     

    The New Assignment dialog box opens.
     
  2. Click Add from a previous year's class or Add from another class this year.
  3. In the Select drop-down list, select the class associated with the assignment you want to copy.
  4. In the list, click the assignment you want to copy, and click Next.
  5. In the New Assignment dialog box, edit the assignment as needed, click Save, and then click OK.

Note: For details on assignment settings, see Post an Assignment to a Class.



Copy Assignments to Another Section of the Same Class

To copy an assignment to another section of the same class, follow these steps:

  1. On the Home tab, click the class that contains the assignment you want to copy.
  2. Scroll down to the Assignments panel.
  1. In the Assignments panel drop-down list, select All to view the assignments for the class.
  2. Click  for the assignment you want to copy.
    The Copy Assignment dialog box opens.
     
  3. Select the check box for the class you want to copy the assignment to, click Copy, and then click OK.

Note: To edit the assignment, see Edit Assignments.

 


Edit Assignments

You can edit an assignment posted to a class and change the visibility settings for posted assignments using the following steps:

  1. On the Home tab, click the class associated with the assignment you want to edit.

  1. On the Overview tab, scroll down to the Assignments panel.

  1. In the Assignments panel drop-down list, select All to view all assignments.
  2. To edit an assignment, click . (For details on assignment settings, see Post an Assignment to a Class.)

 


Review Assignments

If enabled by your PlusPortals administrator, you can review and comment on an assignment for a specific class or for all your classes.


Important: The size limit for files being submitted by students is 50 MB.

Note: Grades are entered using the Gradebook. (See Access the Gradebook.) For more information on the Gradebook, see the TeacherPlus Gradebook.


Review an Assignment for a Specific Class

To review an assignment for a specific class, follow these steps:


  1. On the Home tab, click the class.

     

  2. Click the Turn-ins tab.

    Important: You will only see the Turn-ins tab if your PlusPortals administrator has enabled it.

  3. In the Assignment drop-down list, select the assignment.

    Submissions appear in the list below the Assignment drop-down list.

     

  4. To view a student's submitted assignment, in the Details column, click the Attachments link.
  5. To comment on the assignment, click, and in the Add Comment dialog box, type your comment; then click Save.

    Tip: You can use the text editor to format your comment, add a table, and upload an image. Click to edit a comment.

    The student can view the comment from their student portal.

     

Review Assignments for Multiple Classes

To review assignments for any or all of your classes, follow these steps:

  1. On the Master menu, click the E-Locker tab.

Important: You will only see the E-Locker tab and Assignments tabs if your PlusPortals administrator has enabled them.

  1. Click the Assignments tab.
  2. In the Class drop-down list, select the class associated with the assignment or select All Classes to view assignments for all your classes.
  3. In the Assignment drop-down list, select the assignment.
  4. To view a student's submitted assignment, in the Details column, click the Attachments link.
  5. To comment on the assignment, click or , and in the Add Comment dialog box, type your comments; then click Save.

Tip: You can use the text editor to format your comment, add a table, and upload an image.

The student can view your comments from their student portal.

 


Delete Assignments

You can delete an assignment posted to a class using the following steps:

  1. On the Home tab, click the class that contains the assignment you want to delete.
     
  2. On the Overview tab, scroll down to the Assignments panel.
     
  3. In the Assignments panel drop-down list, select All to view all assignments.
  4. To delete one assignment, click , or to delete multiple assignments, select their check boxes and click Delete.
  5. In the Delete Assignment dialog box, click Confirm.
  6. If the assignment is associated with multiple classes, select the check boxes for the classes you want to delete the assignment from, click Confirm, and then click in the upper-right corner of the dialog box.

Important: When you delete assignments, student submissions of the deleted assignments are also deleted.

 


Hide or Show Posted Assignments

You can change the visibility settings for posted assignments using the following steps:

  1. On the Home tab, click the class associated with the assignment you want to hide or show.
     
  2. On the Overview tab, scroll down to the Assignments panel.
     
  3. In the Assignments panel drop-down list, select All to view all assignments.
  4. To hide an assignment, click; or to display an assignment, click.

 


Automatically Post Assignments to Your Calendar

You can set up new assignments to automatically display on your class calendar. You can define default settings for parent and/or student visibility and calendar category. When you create an assignment, you can override these default settings.

Note: The calendar settings for copied assignments apply unless you change them.

  1. On the User menu, click [your name] > Settings.

  1. Scroll down to Assignment.

  1. Select the Post Assignment to Calendar check box.
  2. Next to Visible To, select the check boxes for the portal calendars you want to automatically add the assignments to.
  3. In the Default Calendar Category drop-down list, select the calendar the assignment will be associated with when no other calendar is specified.
  4. Click OK to save your changes, and click OK again to acknowledge the update.

 


View a Student's Coursework Panel for a Class

To see how your posted coursework appears in the student portal, you can view the coursework on the student portal Class Page tab.

Important: You will only see student options if your PlusPortals administrator has enabled them.

Follow these steps to view the Coursework  panel your student sees for a class.

  1. On the Home tab, find the class and click    > Go to Students:

On the Class Page, click the Students tab.

  1. Click the student you want to view.

Tip: Click to navigate between pages of students.

  1. Scroll down to the Coursework panel.

Important: You will only see the Coursework panel if your PlusPortals administrator has enabled it.

Coursework Panel

A

Print a list of the coursework you're viewing.

B

By default, coursework due in the next 14 days appears in the Coursework panel.

Use the drop-down lists to filter on upcoming, past due, pending, completed, or all coursework and on assignments, quizzes, discussions, or all coursework types.

If you don't see the coursework you're looking for, check your selections in the drop-down lists.

View coursework details.

D

The student can click the coursework to view and/or submit an assignment or to take a quiz.

E

For an assignment, the student can click    to email you, submit the coursework, mark the coursework complete, or print an assignment.

For a quiz, the student can click    to email you or take the quiz.

For a discussion, the student can click  to reply.
